Konfabulate this!

Posted by Mike Sugarbaker at 7:54 am on 2/5/2003

Back when I was a depressed, overpaid plebe at Eazel, I observed that Arlo Rose was a real voice of sanity in the din. His new free project for Mac OS X Jaguar is called Konfabulator and I hereby recommend that my Mac-using friends (you are on OS X now, right, Dad?) check it out when it makes its debut, in 5 days as of this writing.

(For the geeks: it’s an engine for scripting graphically-nice little desktop applets with JavaScript and off-the-shelf tools like Illustrator and Photoshop. Can I please, please have a Windows version for Christmas, Santa? Please?)

You mean you want something like Sash (http://sash.alphaworks.ibm.com/) or perhaps Jscript.net (discussed heavily at http://www.webreference.com/js/)? Is that what you wanted?

  2. Anil Says:

Can’t windows scripting host do most of this?

Just starting using Konfabulator two days ago, and its fabulous. I would assume it’s most like IBM’s Sash. Though since, I’ve never run Sash, I don’t know. But, the best thing about is the ease of creating new applications (called Widgets) with it. I’m interested in developing one that will display the song lyrics based on what’s playing in iTunes. Not the most needed thing in the world, but something that will allow me to stop launching my web browser, everytime I want to view the lyrics of a song.

    One word: Overhyped.

Having now inspected Sash, I don’t think hype is the whole story of Konfabulator. Sometimes, small differences in ease of use and aesthetics all add up to a big difference. Of course, Konfabulator has the advantage of the overdeveloped, underutilized Quartz architecture in OS X. All Sash has to work with is, I’m pretty sure, Internet Explorer.
